I had no intention of watching The Shack, the Stuart Hazeldine film based on the book by William Paul Young. Without having read or seen them, I had labeled both works naive and ham-fisted. But when someone whose values I particularly respect recommended the movie to me, I agreed to give it a try, thinking that, after all, I could check out the first ten minutes—let’s say five.
It is one of the most beautiful, moving, extraordinary films I have ever seen. What struck me most forcefully is how the entity that governs the cosmos is portrayed. It appears in various forms, including in the person of Octavia Spencer. One of the characters calls the being “Papa.”
If I called the luminous magma “Mom”, I would have a mom.
I mean, technically, I have a mom—she's the only one I'll ever have.
